What we do is what we are. And what we are is what we do!

From the moment we are born, we carry with us impressions, or sanskars, that shape our being. Some are innate, some are passed down from our parents, and others are absorbed from our environment. These influences mold our perceptions, behaviors, and reactions to life. However, the defining factor in who we become is not merely what we inherit but what we choose to do with these influences.

The Power of Thought and Will

While we may begin life with certain predispositions, we are not bound by them. Our greatest power lies in our ability to control our thoughts. Every action originates in the mind. If we allow negative, unnecessary, or limiting thoughts to take root, they shape our perception and weaken our resolve. However, by consciously cultivating empowering thoughts, we strengthen our will and gain mastery over our destiny.

Willpower is the key to transformation. We are not merely products of our circumstances; we are architects of our fate. It is within our power to refine our thoughts, actions, and behaviors to align with our highest aspirations. What we think repeatedly, we become. Therefore, we must train ourselves to nurture only thoughts that empower, uplift, and guide us toward excellence.

           The Power of Choice

Life surrounds us with both positive and negative influences. Every day, we encounter situations that test our moral compass, patience, and resilience. While we cannot control everything around us, we have full control over what we accept into our minds. By consciously choosing to reject negativity and focus on constructive thoughts, we direct our energy toward personal growth and the betterment of society.

           Recognizing and Rejecting Negativity

Negativity is a silent thief—it drains our energy, clouds our judgment, and weakens our spirit. It is crucial to develop awareness of not only the discomfort but the disastrous consequences that negative thoughts bring. The moment a negative thought arises; we must recognize it for what it is: an obstacle. We must reject it immediately and replace it with a thought that strengthens and inspires. Just as a disciplined warrior defends his fortress, we must guard our minds against anything that does not serve our higher purpose.

           The Soul’s Inner Power

The soul holds immense strength and wisdom. When we acknowledge this inner power, we realize that we are not helpless against adversity. We possess the ability to stay on the right path and guide our lives toward righteousness. The choice is always ours—to remain steadfast in virtue, nurture empowering thoughts, and steer ourselves toward positivity and purpose.

           The Foundation of Character

Our values and principles define us. The lessons we gather from those before us, the wisdom passed down through generations, serve as a compass in our journey. Words of guidance, such as the importance of discipline, integrity, and resilience, remind us that success is not solely measured by wealth or status but by the strength of our character. A mind trained to think positively and purposefully reinforces these qualities, helping us navigate life’s challenges with grace and determination.

           Ultimate Responsibility Lies Within

At the end of the day, we alone are responsible for who we become. External influences may shape us, but they do not define us. Our conduct, attitude, actions, decisions, and mindset determine our true essence. By taking ownership of our thoughts, filtering out the useless and the negative, and embracing only what empowers us, we forge a path of wisdom, kindness, and integrity.

           Conclusion

What we do is what we are. We are shaped by our actions, but our actions are first shaped by our thoughts. Through unwavering control over our minds, deliberate choices, and a steadfast commitment to positivity, we can become the best version of ourselves. The responsibility lies within us, and the power to stay true to the right path is always in our hands.

Ah, the 21st century—a time when meaningful relationships and deep conversations are replaced by emojis, and our most intimate connection is with Wi-Fi. Welcome to the era of digital dopamine, where loneliness is at record highs, but hey, at least we can order a pizza without talking to a human.

Ever notice how the more you hear something, the more true it feels? Cognitive fluency is the brain’s lazy way of assuming that repetition equals reality. If an idea is simple, catchy, and easily digestible (think Twitter, TikTok, and cable news soundbites), people will swallow it whole. The result? Echo chambers where everyone nods in agreement, oblivious to the world outside their curated feeds (Alter & Oppenheimer, 2009, Journal of Experimental Psychology). This is taking positive affirmations from spirituality to a different level.

Donald Trump used it to significant effect. “Build the Wall,” “Make America Great Again,” and “Fake News” were masterclasses in fluency—simple, repeatable, and easy to digest. Meanwhile, his opponents were busy crafting long-winded policy explanations.

In the audiobook iGen, Jean Twenge paints a picture of a generation that has grown up with smartphones. They’re less rebellious, more tolerant, anxious, and lonelier, utterly unprepared for adulthood (Twenge, 2017).

Once upon a time, teenagers couldn’t wait to escape their parents’ houses for a night of questionable decisions. Now, they stay in their rooms, glued to their screens, blissfully unbothered by the prospect of real-world relationships. A study in JAMA Network Open (Ueda et al., 2020) found that sexual inactivity is at an all-time high among young adults.

The U.S. Census Bureau (2021) reports and a Pew Research Center (2021) study confirms that many young adults are opting out of parenthood altogether. Who needs kids when you have a perfectly good dog and an algorithm that understands you better than most humans?

Social media was supposed to expose us to different viewpoints. Instead, it became a buffet of confirmation bias, where algorithms serve us exactly what we already believe. A 2021 study from New York University and the University of North Carolina (Guess et al., 2021) found that digital bubbles make people more polarized—because why waste time debating when you can block, mute, and cancel anyone who disagrees?

Which brings us to the media. If you get your news from The New York Times, The Atlantic, and NPR, you probably thought Trump’s 2016 victory was a temporary glitch in the American system—one that “real” voters would correct in 2020. Meanwhile, half the country consumed a different reality through talk radio, Facebook groups, and cable news.

So here we are in an era where people are lonelier, less social, more anxious, and utterly trapped in their ideological bubbles. But don’t worry—there’s an app to help with that.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have notifications to check.

Each morning, as I immerse myself in meditation with Jeff Warren’s guidance, I embark on a journey inward, discovering facets of my being that often remain hidden in the hustle of daily life. Today, Jeff illuminated the concept of the “Four Medicines” that meditation graciously offers: concentration, clarity, equanimity, and care.

In those serene moments, I experience a profound focus that gently anchors my wandering thoughts, bringing a soothing calmness to my mind—a testament to the power of concentration. This clarity allows me to observe my inner landscape with a compassionate and understanding eye, revealing truths about myself that lead to deeper self-awareness.

Embracing each sensation and emotion without resistance, I cultivate a sense of balance, finding peace amidst life’s ever-changing tides—this is the essence of equanimity. Placing a hand over my heart, I offer myself kindness and care, nurturing a connection that extends beyond me to the world around.

In just ten minutes of mindful presence, these “medicines” work their subtle magic, fostering healing and a profound sense of well-being. I am moved to share this transformative practice with you, hoping it brings the same love, compassion, and empathy that it has bestowed upon me.

           January 22, 2025

After coming back from a very leisurely vacation, reality hit hard: laundry piles, unpacking chaos, and the task of setting up my new electric toothbrush (courtesy of Secret Santa). While assembling what felt like the Tesla of toothbrushes—and wondering if my Secret Santa was trying to send a message about my oral hygiene—I decided to multitask and listen to Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss.

But the real shocker came when I tackled the under-the-sink organizer my wife had bought. To her amazement, I assembled it in a jiffy. She watched, stunned, as I deftly put together something she was convinced would require her intervention. That’s when I had to come clean: I’d been faking incompetence for 33 years, playing up my “artsy” persona—the guy who writes poetry, sings, dances, and climbs trees to trim bushes. But apparently, all I’d needed was an FBI negotiator in my ears to unlock my inner handyman.

What I learned wasn’t just about hostage negotiation. It was about winning at life’s daily battles—from household chores to managing relationships. Hostages? Sure. But could these skills work in day-to-day life, where negotiations happen over everything from who does the dishes to who controls the TV remote? Absolutely—and with some hilarity.

Here are the lessons I picked up, applied to everyday situations:

            Mirroring

Repeat their words to build rapport.
Teenager: “I can’t believe you won’t let me borrow the car!
”You: “You can’t believe I won’t let you borrow the car?
”Teenager: “Yeah, it’s so unfair!
”You: “It’s unfair?
”After three rounds of this, they’ll either feel so understood they give up or forget why they were angry.

            Labeling

Call out their emotions.
Spouse: “Why didn’t you take the trash out?”
You: “It sounds like you’re upset about the trash.”
Suddenly, the trash becomes secondary to how insightful you are.

            Accusation Audit

Own the hate upfront.
To a friend you’re running late for: “I know you’re thinking I’m always late, that I don’t respect your time, and that I’ll probably do this again. You’re not wrong.”
They can’t yell at you after that level of self-awareness.

            Tactical Empathy

Pretend to care, but in a useful way.
Neighbor: “Your dog keeps digging up my garden.”
You: “I can see how frustrating that must be.”
They still hate your dog, but they feel heard, which is a win.

            The ‘No’ Technique

Ask irresistible questions.
“Would it be crazy to suggest we order pizza instead of cooking tonight?”
Crazy? No! Let’s order pizza.

            The Calibrated Question

Make them solve the problem.
Kids: “Why can’t we go to Disneyland this summer?”
You: “How am I supposed to plan a trip when no one’s doing their chores?”
Now they’re cleaning the house faster than you ever could.

            The FM DJ Voice

Stay calm and smooth.
Boss: “We need this report by 5 p.m.”
You (in a soothing tone): “Of course, I’ll make it a priority.”
Your calm demeanor makes them forget they’re asking for the impossible.

            Anchoring

Start with a bold number.
Negotiating a raise? “I’d like a 30% increase.”
They’ll counter with 15%, but that’s still a win.

            The Black Swan

Find their hidden motivation.
Car salesperson: “This is the best price we can offer.”
You: “I noticed you’re trying to clear this model for next year’s inventory.”
Suddenly, they “find” a better deal.

            Never Split the Difference

No compromises.
Your partner wants to vacation in the mountains, but you want the beach. Instead of meeting in the middle with some random lake destination, you say, “How about we do the beach this year and the mountains next year?” Now you’ve secured the sand and the peace. Never Split the Difference showed me that negotiation isn’t just a skill—it’s an art. Whether you’re haggling with your kids, convincing your boss, or angling for extra guac without paying extra, these strategies can turn the tide in your favor.

Now, armed with FBI-level tactics, I’m ready to negotiate my way to victory—even if it’s just winning the remote!

A common question looms as we age: 'Am I too old to exercise?' The answer is a resounding 'NO!' Whether you’re in your 50s or beyond, it’s never too late to boost your health and vitality. Research shows that staying active can help you defy the typical declines in muscle mass and cardiovascular fitness associated with aging.

           Why Exercise Matters

Muscle Mass & Strength: Regular resistance training helps combat muscle loss, which is crucial for maintaining mobility and independence.

Cardiovascular Health: Walking or swimming improves heart health and endurance, keeping you active longer.

Mental Well-being: Exercise releases endorphins, boosting mood and alleviating anxiety.

Social Connections: Group activities foster friendships, reducing feelings of isolation.

Increased Longevity: Regular physical activity is linked to a longer, healthier life and a lower risk of chronic diseases.

           Overcoming Hesitations

Feeling hesitant to start? Here are some tips:

Ah, aging—the delightful journey where our knees creak louder than our laughter and our memories play an exhilarating game of hide-and-seek. But fear not! The human brain, that squishy marvel, has a secret weapon: neuroplasticity. This incredible ability allows our brains to adapt and change throughout life, making it seem like we might just outsmart old age—or at least outsmart ourselves when we forget where we left our glasses (hint: they’re usually on our heads, right next to the lost remote.

Let’s take a moment to remember Professor Eleanor Maguire, the genius who uncovered the astonishing adaptability of the human brain through her research on London taxi drivers. These brave souls memorized 25,000 streets and landmarks, resulting in their hippocampi growing larger—yes, their brains literally got bigger! Talk about a brain workout! Sadly, we recently lost Professor Maguire, who passed away last weekend, leaving behind a legacy that proves learning can keep our brains as spry as a kangaroo on a trampoline—just without the bouncy enthusiasm.

Speaking of spry, let’s chat about former President Jimmy Carter, who just recently passed away (let’s hope he’s busy playing chess with the squirrels in the afterlife). Carter’s life was a masterclass —building houses, promoting peace, and he is probably having a lively debate with a raccoon about the best peanut butter brand.

And then there’s President Biden, the oldest president in U.S. history, navigating politics like a seasoned taxi driver dodging potholes and pedestrians. One can only assume his secret is a daily crossword puzzle. If he can solve “four-letter word for ‘old’” (hint: it starts with ‘a’), he’s well on his way to neuroplastic success! Just don’t ask him for the answer; he might confuse it with his grocery list.

Now, let’s not forget the ever-enthusiastic Donald Trump, who’s being inaugurated today. Amazing, isn’t it? He keeps his neurons firing by tweeting at all hours. Who needs sleep when you can engage your brain with a 280-character limit? He’s like a caffeinated parrot on a sugar rush! If only his tweets could double as brain exercises—“Two plus two equals… whatever I say it is!” Who knew math could be so flexible?

And let’s not forget the evergreen Ronald Reagan, who famously said, “I don’t remember,” a lot. Perhaps he was just practicing neuroplasticity in a unique way: if you can’t remember, you can’t age! It’s like a fountain of youth, but with more confusion and fewer wrinkles.

So, as we celebrate the remarkable capacity of our brains, let’s embrace aging with a hearty laugh. Neuroplasticity reminds us that learning doesn’t stop with age; it continues as we bumble through life, trying to remember our grandchildren's names (or confusing them with our pets—“Fluffy, stop licking your cousin!”). Here’s to keeping our brains forever young, and may we all find joy in the beautiful chaos of growing older!
